Description

A rich, chocolatey cake made with Dr Pepper for a light, fluffy texture and deep flavor, topped with a warm chocolate glaze.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • Unsalted Butter (1 stick, softened) – Adds richness and moisture.
  • Granulated Sugar (¾ cup) – Provides sweetness and lightness.
  • Egg (1 large, room temperature) – Helps bind the ingredients.
  • Vanilla Extract (1 ¼ tsp) – Enhances the chocolate and Dr Pepper flavors.
  • All-Purpose Flour (1 cup) – The base for structure and softness.
  • Cocoa Powder (¼ cup) – Adds deep chocolate flavor.
  • Baking Soda (½ tsp) – Helps the cake rise properly.
  • Salt (¼ tsp) – Balances sweetness.
  • Whole Milk (¼ cup) – Adds moisture and richness.
  • Dr Pepper (7.5 oz, mini can) – Provides carbonation and flavor.

For the Frosting:

  • Unsalted Butter (2 tbsp) – Creates a smooth, rich glaze.
  • Cocoa Powder (2 tbsp) – Deepens the chocolate taste.
  • Dr Pepper (¼ cup) – Enhances the soda flavor in the frosting.
  • Powdered Sugar (2 cups, sifted) – Thickens the frosting for a glossy finish.

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8 or 9-inch round cake pan with parchment paper and grease the sides.
  2. Cream Butter & Sugar: In a mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add Egg & Vanilla: Mix in the egg and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Alternate Dry & Wet Additions: Gradually add ⅓ of the flour mixture, followed by half of the milk and Dr Pepper. Repeat, finishing with the remaining flour mixture.
  6. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 27-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Prepare Frosting: While the cake bakes, heat butter, cocoa powder, and Dr Pepper in a saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar until smooth.
  8. Frost & Serve: Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake. Let it set for a few minutes before slicing.
